Shavuot Notes – Michael Rood

Standard

The following blog is a transcription of my notes from one of the speakers at Shavuot 2012, with A Rood Awakening.  The weekend was intended to equip and strengthen those able to attend. Seating was limited and there was a cover charge/donation for this “continuing education” event, so it was a small group. The teachings were solid, the fellowship wonderful, the two meals per day provided excellent, and we came home with a box of study helps and teachings.
On a couple of the teachings, I didn’t take great notes, because we were in meetings from 9 am till 10 pm, with meal breaks, and I struggled to stay awake during the afternoon meetings. (I’m so glad I left my boys with my mom, as they would not have done well with the long hours and I would have missed so much!) All of the teachings included teaching helps, power point, pics, etc, which of course, I can’t duplicate here…  All texts are from the Complete Jewish Bible or the KJV as I didn’t have internet access to copy/paste from other versions.

I truly appreciated the many hours of instruction, from several teachers, on the subject of the work of the Holy Spirit.
Though SDA’s say they accept the gifts of the Spirit as being valid for today, they tend to be exceptionally leery of any manifestation of the Spirit, and especially tongues. Unintelligible tongues (not a foreign language) are completely out of the accepted norm, despite Paul’s clear writing in 1 Cor 12, 13 & 14.  Including “though I speak with the tongues of men, even angels” and “Keep on eagerly seeking the things of the Spirit; and especially seek to be able to prophecy.”  Or “I wish you all would speak in tongues” or “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you”  and that tongue is described as “For someone speaking in a tongue is not speaking to people but to God, because no one can understand, since he is uttering mysteries in the power of the Spirit.”  Or… “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit does pray, but my mind is unproductive”.  (None of which sound like the speaking in a foreign, but known to a people group on earth, language).  His instructions on congregational setting is – “Whenever you come together, let everyone be ready with a psalm or a teaching or a revelation, or ready to use his gift of tongues or given an interpretation; but let everything be done for edification.” How do we embrace 1 Cor 13, but toss out so much of 12 & 14?!?!
I’d already been wrestling with these Scriptures vs my upbringing vs my experience with the edifying gift of tongues over the past month – having just realized that the “love” chapter, which has been the defining chapter of my life, is sandwiched between two chapters on the Gifts and Manifestations of the Spirit, which I confess, I don’t understand well, given my upbringing. So, it was incredibly good for me to have hours of solid Biblical teaching on the things of the Spirit!!!

I will say that as I typed these notes up, there were a few things that left questions in my mind. Please know that I don’t have all the answers to all the questions these teachings might bring.  I’m merely transcribing my handwritten notes to typeset and posting as a blog for my remembrance, and to push us all to deeper study.

I will say this – I am convinced that it is okay – No, not just okay, but RIGHT to Eagerly seek the things of the Spirit!!!
“ YHVH, I want more of You and Your Spirit! Make me a vessel of Honor for You to indwell and fill with your Spirit and manifestations in accordance with Your incredible plan for My life!!”

Concerning Pneumonicos – Michael Rood

1 Cor 12:1 But, brothers, I do not want you to go on being ignorant  about things of the Spirit. CJB

Usually translated – spiritual gifts.  However, it would be better translation to say, “Spiritual Matters”

This verbiage connects with 1 Thessalonians 4:13 – 5:10

Now brothers, we want you to know the truth (usually translated “we do not want you to be ignorant”), about those who have died; otherwise, you might become sad the way other people do who have nothing to hope for. For since we believe that Yeshua died and rose again, we also believe that in the same way, YHVH, thru Yeshua , will take with him those who have died. When we say this, we base it on the Lord’s own word: we who remain alive when the Lord comes will certainly not take precedence over those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaving with a rousing cry, with a call from one of the ruling angels, and with YHVH’s shofar, those who died united with Messiah will be the first to rise, then we who are left still alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we will always be with the Lord. So encourage each other with these words.
chapter 5: But you have no need to have anything written to you, brothers, about the times and dates when this will happen; because you yourselves well know that the Day of the Lord will come like a “thief in the night” When people are saying “Everything is so peaceful and secure,” then destruction will suddenly come upon them, the way labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there is now way they will escape.
But you, Brothers, are not in the dark, so that the Day should take you by surprise like a thief; for you are all people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We don’t belong to the night or to darkness, so let’s not be asleep, like the rest are: on the contrary, let us stay alert and sober.  People who sleep, sleep at night; and people who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us stay sober, putting on trust and love as a breastplate and hope of being delivered as a helmet.  For YHVH has not intended that we should experience his fury, but that we should gain deliverance through our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, who died on our behalf so that whether we are alive or dead, we may live along with him. Therefore, encourage each other and build each other up – just as you are doing!

First – this is written to believers who are losing friends and loved ones lost to persecution, so is dealing directly with the context of their lives, now – both that they are losing fellow believers to death, and they themselves needed encouragement as they face the opposition.

Second, Paul makes it clear this is not what he is saying – rather “by the word of YHVH” or “we base it on the Lord’s own word”

Third, the coming of the Lord is clearly not a secret rapture!

Fourth, “Day of the Lord” and “like a thief in the night” were both familiar idioms to those who had cultural understanding of Judaism gained by their attendance in the synagogues (which Paul clearly encourages and did himself) even if they were not brought up as Jews.   Specifically, “like a thief in the night” references back to the night watchmen in the temple. If they fell asleep, and where found by one of the ruling priests, that priest had the authority to set the night watchman’s clothes on fire.  The Temple Institute has released a book with a painting of this very thing occurring.  This was commonly referred to as the priest being a “thief in the night”.

Fifth, – Verse 4 makes a clear transition – From thief in the night/unprepared/all saying peace and safety to “BUT YOU BROTHERS are not in the dark!”:  This is why there was no need to write to them about times and dates of when – because Christians, still at this point observed the Feasts of the Lord and were familiar with their prophetic significance.  (Many Christians didn’t drop those feasts until after Constantine’s constitutional edict in 321 AD followed by the Council of Laodicea in 363 AD and many who disobeyed the constitution & decisions of that counsel were put to death in the years following.)

Sixth, verse 8 – Faith and love as a breastplate and hope of deliverance as a helmet.
There is a similar verse in Isa 59:17 – He put on Righteousness as his breastplate, salvation as a helmet on his head ….

Faith is the substance of things hoped for! Hebrews 11:1
YHVH is the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him!
see Hebrews 11:6 – and without trusting, it is impossible to be well pleasing to YHVH, because whoever approaches Him must trust that He does exist and that He becomes a Rewarder to those who seek Him out!

Love – John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another…
“Husbands, love your wives even as Messiah also loved the “church”.”  In Greek the word translated church is “ecclesia” – which is also used in the Septuagint for the verses referring to the assembly of the Hebrews at the foot of Mt Sinai. See Duet 18:15, 16 (which btw is also a prophecy concerning the Messiah/Prophet to come).

Hope of Salvation is what is to guard our Heads, our minds.

Coming back to 1 Cor 12…
verse 7 – “Moreover, to each person is given the particular manifestation of the Spirit that will be for the common good.” CJB
“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal” KJV
We might say that it “puts your life together” in a way which fully reflects the glory of YHVH.

Admonition from Ephesians 6:13-17: So take up every piece of war equipment YHVH provides; so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist; and when the battle is won, you will still be standing. THEREFORE STAND! Have the belt of truth buckled around your waist, put on righteousness for a breastplate, and wear on your feet the readiness that comes from the Good News of shalom. Always carry the shield of trust, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. And take the helmet of Deliverance; along with the sword given by the Spirit, that is, the Word of YHVH.

Concerning Pnuemonicos – Part 2

Zechariah 9:12-17 but in particular verse 13
For I have Bent Judah as my bow, and made Ephraim its arrow. I will rouse your sons, Tzion and make you like a warrior’s sword against your sons, Greece.

We are to stay straight! Judah will bend, But Ephraim, when used by YHVH is to remain the arrow.

Back to Concerning pnuemonicos –
Matters of the Spirit?
1 Cor 12:7 Furthermore (But) of the manifestations of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.  (to put all the pieces together.)

1 Cor 10: 1-6, 11-12  For, brothers, I don’t want you to miss the significance of what happened to our fathers. All of them were guided by the pillar of cloud, and they all passed thru the sea, and in connection with the cloud and with the sea they all immersed themselves into Moses, also they all ate the same food from the spirit, and they all drank the same drink from the Spirit – for they drank from a Spirit-sent rock which followed them, and that Rock was the Messiah. Yet with the majority of them YHVH was not pleased, so their bodies were strewn across the desert.
Now these things took place as prefigurative historical events, warning us not to set our hearts on evil things as they did. Don’t be idolaters, as some of them were –as the Tanakh puts it, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and then got up to indulge in revelry……  These things happened to them as prefigurative historical events and they were written down as a warning to us who are living in the end of Days. Therefore, let anyone who thinks he is standing up be careful not to fall.” CJB

The Rock was Messiah!!!
In Numbers 20:8-9 Moses was told to speak to the Rock.  The Hebrew literally says he was to “declare” the Rock.
The Rock was to be a shadow picture of Yeshua, who was only to be smitten once! After that, He’s to be declared! Moses didn’t go into the Promised Land because he messed up the Shadow picture.

Going to the Pentecost account in Acts 2 – the sound, the fire of YHVH “filled” the place where they were sitting. Again, let’s remember that a crowd gathered in amazement at the fact that each could hear in their mother tongue.. Jews from all over the known world. We know from historians that ~ 1 million Jews were on the Temple Mount for each of the pilgrimage feasts – Shavuot being one of them.   So many heard Peter speak, and were convicted that 3000 people were baptized that day!

Going back to “Filled” the Greek word is Pletho and means Filled to overflowing!!!

Side by side pictures of the cloud of Fire over the Tabernacle and tongues of Fire over each disciple (each tabernacle of YHVH)

We can see from Scripture that a prophet is often the Spokesman…
The Spirit is given in many ways: As a word of knowledge (information) ; a word of wisdom (what we do with that information); Healing

2 Kings 5 – Naaman story, Elisha has all three.

1 Kings 13 – the prophet who obeyed not YHVH was killed by a Lion, tho the lion did not eat him, nor the donkey.
The lesson here is, Even if someone says, “The Lord told me” we must be tru to what YHVH has told us!

Manifestations of the Spirit, – Words of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues and interpretation thereof (1 Cor 12:8-10) are given to make us WHOLE!! This is our inheritance, those who are the Prophets or spokespersons of YHVH!

Concerning Pneumonicos –things of the Spirit

This teaching was an overview reading of Acts 2, 3, 4 & 5
The following were points that piqued my interest…

Again, the manifestation of the Spirit is given so we can put the pieces all together.
In Acts 4:26, the Ps 2:1-2 quoted also connects to the man of sin that Keith referenced earlier in the weekend.

Acts 4:36, 37 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, the son of consolation) a Levite & of the country of Cyprus. (The son of consolation can also be interpreted – the son of a prophet, of The Exhorter, or the Encourager depending on translation.)
Having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

This (and all of Paul’s) writings must be read with an understanding of the Torah…
The Levite was not to own land, so Joses sold his land because he was a Levite.  He was, presumably, taken into the inner circle, since the disciples nicknamed him Son of the Encourager!  It was likely this acceptance which prompted jealousy within Ananias & Sapphira to sell their property but keep back some of the profits.

To say more on Paul’s writings; He was a student of Gamli’el. Historic documents tell us that in order to be Gamli’el’s student, one had to memorize the ENTIRE Torah and have a firm understanding of the rest of the OT.  We also know that Gaml’el was the Aviv Barley judge.

I’m a follower of Yeshua, and my faith is an integral part of my life. Part of how He created me to reflect Him is to be a teller of the Story. I share my story, not as an exhibitionist, not for the attention it might receive, not for accolades or recognition, but, for His Glory – so that others, as they read, as they see how YHVH has led and loved me over the course of time, can be edified, lifted up, encouraged to Look to HIM, to Trust Him, to pursue Holy Wholeness with every fiber of their beings. Within this blog, I want community and conversation and interaction. I want to offer hope, and joy, and also thought provoking bits that make one look deeper into the heart of Elohim. This is my place to share my thoughts, wrestlings and just daily life. Please, please feel free to comment, discuss and even dissect & respectfully disagree.
